Clocks about to go forward in UK
Tonight (March 29, 2008), or rather early tomorrow morning; then we'll be in BST rather than GMT. A pity; it's now light until about 7pm and it would have been nice to see the days get longer gradually and naturally - rather than this sudden quantum leap to being light until about 8pm. Now, if we were in BST (1 hour ahead of GMT) all the year round this wouldn't happen because it would already be light until about 8pm! There'd be other advantages too:
• Winters would seem shorter and less depressing with it getting dark at 5pm latest rather than 4pm
• Schoolchildren would always get home in the light.
• There'd probably be fewer road accidents
• We'd be aligned with European Time
• We'd avoid the twice-yearly change of clocks and watches - not to mention domestic and industrial timers
• We'd save electricity and so be Greener (there are more people about from 4pm to 7pm than there are from 5am to 8am). The only disadvantage is that mornings would be darker instead, so more people would have to set off to work in the dark. Yet, isn't it better to be travelling into light rather than travelling into darkness? For years people have been trying to get an appropriate Bill through the House of Commons; curiously enough, it always gets "talked out". |
