In Praise of avoiding older Women
Forgive me, all you ladies fair,
Of "indeterminate" age.
That I avoid catching your eye,
And am not snared in your cage. 'Tis not that grey may streak your hair,
Or stomach muscles sag.
Sure wisdom sits upon your brow,
But how was that truth won? Your youth was in the years of mine -
We might have met, if fates decreed.
We know the songs of yesteryear
And still believe the words. "Ideally matched" my friends might say,
"So much in common too,
"To talk about through dwindling day.
"Companionship for you!" So might have been if, in that past,
We had then met and stayed
Together; then those grey hairs
Would be as part of us. My happiness, and loneliness,
Too hardly have been won,
To live a stranger's past as well
In the rays of the setting sun. No joy for me recounting my
Tales of half-remembered loves?
They are my past but they are past,
And my clay is still wet enough. No joy for me listening to your
Tales of half-remembered loves?
They are your past but they are past,
