Yerba Mate versus Tea or Coffee
By Roy Law of Soft-Spoken Words
I first came across it through my work as a polo commentator - most of the Argentinian grooms were drinking it and I heard sayings like "it adds another goal on your polo handicap". At first sight it looks like herbal tea (or dried grass clippings), is made with non-boiling water and is conventionally drunk out of a dried gourd through a metal straw. I wasn't too impressed at first, but two things happened at the same time: I had a Red Bull habit, which had already risen to six a day My daughter and her husband-to-be returned from the Argentine with a proper bombilla and mate (gourd) as a present for me. So I started drinking yerba mate seriously and the result was startling: Day 1. Down to four Red Bull Day 2. Down to two Red Bull Day 3. Didn't drink any Red Bull (and haven't since!) Where it is unique as a drink is that it is both invigorating and relaxing. This is the best website I've found so far. In terms of caffeine content, that of yerba mate appears to lie between that of black tea and coffee. Preferably, make it in the traditional way; however, you can buy yerba mate bags (like tea) and these are good for when you are away from home. Some like it sweet; I like it as it is, even though it's still hard for me to smile while I'm drinking it! TIP 1. Water temperature should be just before the boil, don't use boiling water. TIP 2. "Wet" it evenly to a homogenous paste before you add the bulk of the water; stir as you add the water. TIP 3. Dispose of the leaves either on your compost heap or in your waste bin - do not flush the leaves down your sink - yerba mste seems to have remarkable powers of coagulating and blocking sinks! This drink is one of nature's gems, enjoy it.

I came across Yerba Mate while installing a computer system in Paraguay in 1989. I brought a Gourd, Straw and large bag of Mate back to England, where the others in the office looked at me as if I was crazy, drinking tea out of a gourd with a straw. I do find that I like the taste, and it really has helped make me feel more energetic when I drink it. I must look for a good source in the UK, but my Gourd after close to 20 years of being in storage doesn't look so good these days. I did find however that making Mate in a Cafetier works quite well.

Thanks for that, the kettle's gone straight on and the cafetiere dusted down! Greg Glue of Polo Splice at Lodsworth in Sussex (sorry no URL) would probably be happy to supply you by post.
Cool, thanks. I might have to think about that. I lived quite healthily the last 2 years in Florida, and also on moving back to the UK at the end of July, however with the onset of winter my diet and also my ability to head out on evening walks has diminished, and I have promised myself that this year I will work on getting healthier and losing more weight. Yerba Mate would help me to do that.

Any supplier of Polo gear in Florida will keep some in stock, principally for the Argentinian grooms. Used small cafetiere, unlike coffee it stayed at the top and I enjoyed watching it absorb the water and float down. Now have turned the lid round and inserted the bombilla (straw). Much more stable on an office desk. Still can't smile while I'm drinking it ...
